Path of Exile Item Upgrades

The performance of many Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading the performance of them. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is often superior to modernized Common or Magic equipment because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They increase the stats of whatever item they are attached to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of games and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternatively, they can also be rescued from items with upgrade components inside them, using an expert or greater salvage kit.

The amount of damage that an armored item upgrader mod or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the extent of its upgrades. The damage absorption of an armor piece will increase when it's upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. But, it's important to keep in mind that this will increase its weight, which will cause it to weigh more than it was before.

There are several different types of armor upgrade available in the game. Each has a different effect. For instance, item upgrader mod certain upgrades will give the armor a certain number of additional health points, while others make it stronger and lighter. The name of the armor upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade the item can be given, as illustrated below.

All kinds of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler, with the exception of the rare and legendary gems that require you to be at a high enough level to qualify for them. Like other upgrade components jewels can be swapped with a identical jewel without destroying the original one. However, you can only replace the jewels in a piece of equipment once.

The use of more jewels in the movement can make it feel more comfortable and is usually performed to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. In addition to enhancing performance, the diamonds create an area that is stronger than steel, so the repeated friction with pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the appearance of your weapons and shields. They offer a small benefit and can be swapped out at any time but aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold and a scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be removed, which returns them to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as aegis and traits, aren't swappable and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to provide your hero with many small, but valuable benefits. They can be obtained in the starter areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, and by completing road interactions. They can be purchased from the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket a player can unlock is the cloak. It grants a small but valuable boost in movement speed and the ability to evade. The player can then collect necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar fashion to how they acquired weapons and armor. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced and are only compatible with certain trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This allows the hero to be more effective when not active, and can also help to compensate for the absence of a strong team or the absence of any talent tree slots that would normally be filled with hero's ideal stats.

As a rule trinket upgrades should be a priority BiS (Best item upgrade in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace in the near future. Next, any items that have desirable statistics are less significant than the iLevel of the item upgrading that is to be upgraded. This is especially true if an item has multiple stats that you wish to upgrade, as it's often better to upgrade just one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.

In the beginning of the game, players in the jungle are likely to upgrade their yellow trinket into a red one, while top and middle players usually choose a green or pink ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices can affect a hero's ability to control the map.
